New publication: Survivability of Territorial Autonomy

Dec 15, 2025

The Finnish Society of Sciences and Letters has published Survivability of Territorial Autonomy: A Study of Contributory Factors that Explain the Preservation and Secession of Autonomous Territories by Richard Eveli.

The book examines why some autonomous territories persist over time while others move toward secession and independence. Based on a comparative analysis, the study focuses on ethnic and economic factors that shape the stability and long-term viability of autonomous arrangements.

The book constitutes Richard Eveli’s doctoral dissertation in political science at Åbo Akademi and contributes to research on state formation, autonomy, and territorial politics. By identifying patterns and explanatory factors, it offers new perspectives on the relationship between central states and autonomous territories in different parts of the world.

The book is intended for researchers and students in political science and related fields, as well as for policymakers and others with an interest in issues of autonomy and territorial governance.

The publication is available online and can also be purchased from the Tiedekirja Bookstore at Snellmaninkatu 13 in Helsinki.
