The Finnish Society of Sciences and Letters will participate in the event with its own programme, hosted at the Society\u2019s premises on Pohjoinen Makasiinikatu 7 A in Kaartinkaupunki, Helsinki.<br><br>As part of the programme, the editors of the Society\u2019s scientific publications will engage in discussions with authors on topics such as how the Soviet Union used the Kalevala to influence the relationship between Soviet Karelia and Finland, and how ordinary people became involved in alcohol smuggling networks during the Prohibition era. The authors will present their research, offering unexpected perspectives on both historical and contemporary societal issues.<br><br>In addition to the\u00a0discussions, attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about the Society and explore its premises during the evening.<br><br>The programme will be conducted in Swedish and English.<br><br>This event is open to the public and requires no registration.<br><br>We warmly welcome you to attend!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Programme:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>6:30 PM\u20137:00 PM: Contested Heritage: Kalevala, Pan-Finnism, and Soviet Karelia<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Jan Sundberg and Dr. Takehiro Okabe, both from the University of Helsinki, discuss Okabe&#8217;s work <em>Taming Greater Finland<\/em>. This study explores how the Soviet Union used pan-Finnism and the Kalevala to exert influence over Soviet Karelia and shape its relationship with Finland. Okabe\u2019s research uncovers complex cultural exchanges and resistance among Finns, Karelians, and Veps, offering fresh insights into Finnish-Soviet relations during 1940\u20131956.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>7:00 PM\u20137:10 PM: Discussion<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>7:10 PM\u20137:15 PM: Break<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>7:15 PM\u20137:45 PM:<\/strong> <strong>Dolda n\u00e4tverk \u2013 Sm\u00e5folket och spritsmuggling under f\u00f6rbudstiden<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Lars Westerlund (\u00c5bo Akademi) presenterar sin bok <em>&#8220;Vem var spritsmugglarna? D\u00e5 sm\u00e5folket blev f\u00f6retagare&#8221;<\/em>, som ger en djupare inblick i f\u00f6rbudstidens spritsmuggling och de vanliga m\u00e4nniskor som drev verksamheten.
