The Section of Humanities comprises the central humanistic disciplines: the arts and aesthetics; classical studies; cultural research including ethnology and folklore; history and archaeology; languages (general linguistics, classical and modern languages); philosophy; religious studies and theology. Within the section, there is significant expertise on non-European languages and cultures.
Members of the Section participate actively as presenters at the Society’s meetings and seminars. In addition, the Section organises its own seminars on current topics. The Section has a Prize Nomination Committee which prepares proposals for nominations of international awards.
Humanities research is mainly published in the publication series Commentationes Humanarum Litterarum, and in domestic languages in the series Bidrag till kännedom om Finlands natur och folk (Contribution to the knowledge of Finland’s nature and peoples). The Section’s member, Professor of Roman archeology Eva Margareta Steinby, is Honorary Member of the Finnish Society of Sciences and Letters.
